What masses are celebrated at the Sagrada Familia?
Masses at the Sagrada Familia are organized by location and by type of congregation. While the Crypt hosts the daily parish life of the local community, the Main Nave is reserved for larger-scale, global events. Understanding these differences is essential for choosing the right experience:

International mass in the basilica
This Mass takes place in the temple’s Main Nave, the architectural space designed by Antoni Gaudí and characterized by its tree-like structures. Services in this area are scheduled exclusively for weekends and Holy Days of Obligation.
Organized by the Archdiocese of Barcelona, these masses at the Sagrada Familia are oriented toward pilgrims and visitors from around the world. Since their establishment in 2017, the liturgy has been conducted in five languages—Catalan, Spanish, French, English, and Italian—offering a truly universal experience.

Where are Masses held?
Any visitor wishing to attend Mass at the Sagrada Família must keep in mind that the building houses two separate places of worship, each with its own protocols and entrances:
- The Crypt: The original space where daily parish Masses are held. Admission is free (until capacity is reached) and it is primarily attended by the local community.
- The Main Nave (Basilica): Reserved for international Masses on Sundays and special feast days. While admission is free, space is strictly limited and requires specific planning due to high demand. The Nativity Façade is the main entrance for this type of visit.
Unlike tourist visits, attending Mass at the Sagrada Família is subject to strict dress codes and conduct regulations.
Is there a dress code for attending Mass?
Yes — the Sagrada Familia enforces a strict dress code for all visitors. As a sacred space, the basilica requires modesty and respect. Security staff monitor all entrances and refuse entry to anyone who does not comply with these rules.
The main rule requires both men and women to cover their shoulders and wear clothing that reaches at least mid-thigh.
The following items are not allowed:
- Sleeveless tops, spaghetti-strap tops, or tank tops.
- Shorts or skirts that do not cover the legs to at least mid-thigh.
- Sheer clothing, low-cut necklines, or swimwear.
- Hats and caps (visitors must remove these upon entering, except for religious or medical reasons).
- Promotional clothing with slogans or images that distract from the site's sacred nature.
Practical tip: bringing a scarf, shawl, or pashmina is an easy way to cover your shoulders if needed. If a visitor forgets, several shops near the basilica sell suitable garments so you can comply with the rules.
How do you access the masses?
The entry procedure for masses at the Sagrada Familia varies significantly depending on the location of the liturgy. It is essential to use the correct entrance and to consider the recommended wait times for each site:
Although admission to the International Mass is free, high demand and limited capacity (approximately 500 seats) require rigorous planning. Attendees must go to the Nativity Facade (Calle de la Marina). This entrance is different from the general entrance used for tourist visits.
Due to the high volume of visitors, it is recommended to arrive between 45 and 60 minutes before the start of the ceremony. During peak tourist season, this time may extend to 90 minutes to ensure entry.
